What a Morning

Posted on 7:28 AM by Unknown
I have had one eventful morning…Let me just tell you the adventure Parker and I went on. Oh and I wish I would have taken pictures but I was afraid for my clothes! Alright, here goes.

It all started when Parker came wandering into the bathroom this morning. He had already had some toilet paper for breakfast and I was trying to block him from getting back to it again. I was in the process of putting on my eye shadow; you know…the brown eye shadow with the gold glittery flakes in it. Well as I’m sure you know, it comes in a little cup. Well in true Parker fashion, my nosey little one decided that he wanted to see what that was…He ran his hand along the counter peeking up to make sure he’d found what he was looking for. Before I could stop him he’d grabbed hold of the eye shadow digging his little fingers into the shiny powder. When I finally got it out of his grasp he had shiny golden brown hands and of course, after tasting it, he had a shiny golden brown face and mouth. I scrambled to get the eye shadow off of my hands and then while avoiding his hands so they wouldn’t ruin my khaki pants, I grabbed him up and held him up the sink to wash his hands as well. Of course he loved this…After getting his hands clean I did my best to get his face eye shadow free, this is not an easy task when your shiny toddler is squirming around and acting like you are torturing him. I got most of it but he went to school with a shiny eye shadow beard, Cayne will be oh so jealous. As I said before…no pictures L it would have been priceless and the thought crossed my mind before I decided to just get him clean in an act to save my clothes.

After our eye shadow fiasco, we traveled into the living room where I should have turned on Mickey Mouse Clubhouse…but I didn’t and I would have missed the story on Amber Portwood and her 3 felony domestic violence charges and the fact that her lawyer thinks she is “responsible” whatev! Ok back to my story! So I was in the kitchen making my coffee while Parker happily played with his toys…or so I thought. I turned around just as he was raising the green cup of Dr. Pepper that his Daddy had left on the end table the night before. I gasped and said “Nooo” before taking it away and in that second and a half; he managed to spill it on the floor. Thankfully none of the sticky old Dr. Pepper made it onto his clothes! I tore a paper towel off of the roll and when I looked over my shoulder at Parker, he was happily splashing in his soda puddle. Such a boy. I decided I should probably use a Clorox sheet on this mess after getting the liquid off of the floor and Parker’s hands. Once I’d cleaned his fun up, Parker decided I was a spoil sport and wandered back into the living room.

I continued to make my Gingerbread coffee (on my Keruig which is awesome…just wish it made cappuccino) and I guess it was my turn to make a mess because I spilled my coffee as I was pouring it into my travel tumbler. I cleaned my mess and went to put Parker’s jacket on. He was being a little difficult at first but we got the jacket on and zipped and headed out the door! Once in the car he decided he did not want to get in after all and stiffened his little body as straight as a board. I climbed into the backseat and lifted him up to tickle his belly hoping that this would make him curl and then I could plop him into his seat…wrong! So I did it the meany mom way and pushed his mid section down forcing him to sit in the seat and then wrangled the strap over his left shoulder and locked in place. This wasn’t to terrible but he was screaming like I was trying to kill him so I’m glad that there were no neighbors to witness this episode. I got the other strap on and locked and then pulled it tight with all of my strength, Graco car seats are surprisingly difficult!

After getting him all strapped in and safe I started the car and then went back inside to get the diaper bag, my coat and my coffee and as I was walking out the door I noticed something wet on my hand and arm…My damn travel tumbler was leaking! Oh hell to the no! I paid 15 bucks for this thing it better not leak! Apparently I had not screwed the cap on correctly and that’s why it was leaking. Fail. I pulled the wipes out of the diaper bag to clean myself and my cup off and then re screwed the top on the cup…it didn’t work, it was still leaking, what the crap! I decided that my car smelled enough like gingerbread coffee and that I could deal with the cup once I got to work. We were now, finally, on our way to daycare.

Parker was more than happy to be at school and walked to his classroom without a fuss, he walked over to his best bud Cayne to see why he was crying and I assume was telling him that he was ok and that they should go climb on the stair things. I walked over and took his jacket off while his teacher explained that he’d been bitten at some point yesterday but that he had not cried and therefore she didn’t know who had done it or when it had happened. I told her that it was not her fault and that it was alright, it was to be expected. I was sure it was probably done over a toy or something but to try and keep an eye out so they could find out which kiddo was doing the biting. Parker meandered over to his teacher and held his arms up so she would pick him up. He was loving on her when he decided he wanted me to take him, of course I said no because I had to leave and he was not pleased with me then. He squirmed out of his teacher’s arms and ran after me with his arms in the air. I had already made it out the gate by the time he got to it and he stood there crying for me. My heart was broken but I tried to distract him, telling him to show his teacher his new shoes…it didn’t work. He walked over to the soft stair things and threw himself down screaming and crying while his teacher tried to calm him down. I heard him crying all the way to the front door! I hate leaving him when he is crying like that but I had to get to work!

I am happy to say that once I was in the car and on the way to work everything was fine. I just hope my day goes better than my morning!

Hot Cold Hot Cold...

Posted on 9:25 AM by Unknown
You may think I am talking about this crazy Texas weather, 40 degrees one day and 83 the next! I wish that was what I was talking about but no, I am talking about myself!

I refuse to go to the doctor's office...call me stubborn. I ran fever all night last night and it finally broke this morning. I was in a constant rhythm all night, pulling the covers over myself and curling up into a ball and then throwing the covers off of myself and laying there all stretched out hoping that some air from the fan would reach me. I didn't check my temperature or take any Ibuprofen until 5:30 this morning, "let's be smart about this Honey" is all Michael said this morning while I was on my way back to bed. I would have taken something sooner but I didn't want to get up...fever makes my entire body ache, oh well. I'll remember that line next time he's sick.

So I know I've been completely neglecting my blog...I had planned on making a Christmas background and header, posting the card I chose (not from Shutterfly, long story), and posting my Christmas pictures that turned out super adorable! Obviously none of that happened and now that Christmas is almost over there is no point!

Well I guess I'd better make use of my day off, even if I do feel yucky. Time to clean house, do laundry and wrap the rest of our Christmas gifts.

I will post again soon with those Christmas pictures and also some pictures and videos from our Christmas celebrations last weekend and this weekend!

A Shutterfly Christmas

Posted on 9:38 AM by Unknown
I have been reading a few blogs over the last week or two and noticed that everyone is talking about Shutterfly! They are having a promotion for bloggers for 50 free Christmas cards. I thought this was pretty awesome so I looked into it! To be honest I’d heard of Shutterfly before but never really got on the website to check it out and I have to say, I have totally been missing out!

I have been trying to decide on the perfect Christmas card for a while and when I got onto Shutterfly to check out their selection I was only more confused. There were so many great cards on this site to choose from, not to mention the sizes and styles you were able to customize. If you want a folded card you got it! A flat card, glossy or cardstock, those were some choices.

Now I can’t lie, I spent at least an hour perusing the twenty plus pages of fun, traditional, sweet and touching cards. There were a lot to choose from but I eventually narrowed it down to these three.

I can’t wait to get started choosing pictures to go into each design so I can make my final decision.

Other than picking out my Christmas cards I have been looking at their desktop calendars and photo books as possible gifts. They offer a huge selection and I’m going to be checking it all out very soon.

What kind of Christmas cards do you and your family like? Do you have a theme or something special you do when picking a card?

Guest Blog

Posted on 3:16 PM by Unknown
Remember how I said I was going to be posting a guest blog soon? Well here it is my friends! It is discussing a topic I find very important and that I feel should be discussed more often, Sign Language.

About 4 years ago while working at Ross, I was at my register when a little boy wandered up to the front and began signing "Mother" to me. I knew right away that he had gotten lost and needed help finding his mother. I tried as best I could to ask him if he knew where his mommy was but I was not doing very well. A co-worker of mine walked the little boy around the store and eventually found his mother.

I remember feeling helpless and thinking that I should have taken ASL more seriously in high school. That poor little boy couldn't have been older than 5 and he was afraid but couldn't communicate.

Since then, working at the bank I have helped deaf customers and always regret not retaining that knowledge so that I could help them.

Our guest blog post was written by Emily Patterson of Primrose Schools. She contacted me in hopes that I would post her article and get the word out about Early Childhood Development and American Sign Language.

For over 25 years, Primrose Schools has helped individuals achieve higher levels of success by providing them with an AdvancED® accredited, early childhood, education.  Through an accelerated Balanced Learning® curriculum, Primrose Schools students are exposed to a widely diverse range of subject matter giving them a much greater opportunity to develop mentally, physically and socially.  Emily Patterson is currently working as a communications coordinator for Primrose Schools providing written work to the blogosphere which highlights the importance, and some of the specific aspects, of a quality, early childhood, education.

Early Childhood Education – Acquiring Sign Language

Bilingual ability as well as the ability to communicate in non-verbal ways for the benefit of the disabled, primarily the deaf, will continue to be a great skill to have in a titled economic system.  With opportunities to achieve a decent standard of living limited, having the ability to communicate in a variety of ways with the widest possible audience and having versatility, are two great keys to doing well.

There is a growing shortage of qualified interpreters fluent in American Sign Language has led to more career opportunities – and if current trends continue, it's likely that skilled ASL interpreters will have little problem securing lucrative employment in a society where such a commodity is destined to be in short supply.

Signing Before They Can Speak

The ages 2 to 5 have proven to be the best time to educate children in different modes of communication and language. This goes beyond the spoken word (though it is an optimal time for children to learn a second language); many young children have an aptitude for signing as well. This can be taught at home or some child care programs incorporate it into their curriculum.

You may be aware that many indigenous peoples around the world, including American Indian nations, have used sign language for centuries to facilitate communication with other tribes with whom they do not share a language. Some paleontologists and anthropologists theorize that Neanderthals – who apparently lacked the vocal mechanism to produce many spoken words – depended a great deal upon hand gestures to communicate.

In fact, recent research suggests that sign language is innate. An article published in the Boulder Daily Camera in 2003 presented strong evidence that babies as young as six months old communicate with their hands:

"...by 6 to 7 months, babies can remember a sign. At eight months, children
can begin to imitate gestures and sign single words. By 24 months, children
can sign compound words and full sentences. They say sign language reduces
frustration in young children by giving them a means to express themselves
before they know how to talk." (Glarion, 2003)

Also cited is a study funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development demonstrating that young children who are taught sign language at an early age actually develop better verbal skills as they get older. The ability to sign has also helped parents in communicating with autistic children; one parent reports that "using sign language allowed her to communicate with her [autistic] son and minimized his frustration...[he now] has an advanced vocabulary and excels in math, spelling and music" (Glarion, 2003).

The Best Time To Start

Early childhood education in signing give pre-verbal youngsters not only give them a way to communicate, it can also strengthen the parent-child bond – in addition to giving children a solid foundation for learning a skill that will serve them well in the future. The evidence suggests that the best time to start learning ASL is before a child can even walk – and the implications for facilitating the parent-child relationship are amazing.

Thank you Emily for this article and if any one would like more information please let me know.

Happy Birthday to Me!

Posted on 7:15 AM by Unknown
Today is my birthday! I got to work and there was a happy birthday banner hanging from my desk along with confetti all over my desk. It was so nice, It made the day special. A coworker of mine also made me a cake, my absolute favorite cake as a matter of fact.

Doesn’t that look delish? It was, believe me, and it took all I had to not go back for seconds.

If you’re wondering about McFatty Monday…it’s kind of been non existent here lately and that is because I let myself fall off of the health wagon. I’ve been ignoring everything that had to do with losing weight, I think I got discouraged and now every time I think “yeah I’m going to start Zumba” it ends up that I have 500 excuses as to why I haven’t started and what is keeping me from doing it.

I’ve thought about C25K, Callie mentioned she wanted to do it also but we never get around to actually getting together. I can’t get myself out of my recliner!

I. Am. A. Slacker…you can say it to, it’s true. I swear, AFTER THE HOLIDAYS I will try my hardest to get my McFatty butt out of the recliner and outside.

So is anyone else excited about Thanksgiving?! I am SO excited, I am making a TON of mashed potatoes, a Jack Daniels pie and cucumber salad. Other than the food I am so looking forward to seeing family. We don’t all get together often so when we do it’s a lot of fun.

This weekend should be fun too; me and Parker are going to Houston to visit my side of the family. I know there is a shopping trip planned (Of course) so I am going to get the stroller out, the snack prepared and HOPEFULLY Parker won’t have any meltdowns. I can’t complain Parker is very good and there will be enough of us that someone will be able to entertain him when he gets tired or mad at one of us.

Did I tell y’all I got my house all decorated and looking great?! I am a big fan of the traditional Christmas. I use red, green and gold ball ornaments, and then we add a snowman ornament every year. I wanted to do mainly snowmen at first so I try to get one every year. I am starting to incorporate Santa into the mix now. I love the primitive, old looking things; I have several snowmen that have the “carved out of wood” look. I love my primitive stuffed snowman with “Merry Christmas” stitched on it.

I am going to be working on the tree in the evenings this week and hopefully have it done by Friday it is very traditional. Red, green and gold balls, small bows, some snowman ornaments, “rustic” bells... this year I hope to add some sweet handmade ornaments from Parker.

I hope we can get the lights on the house next weekend and then we’ll be done! I’m ready to go drive the neighborhoods and look at everyone’s lights. Our neighbor across the street is on the ball; they’ve already got their outside lights up.

Has anyone else started their decorating? If so, what do your decorations look like? Do you have a theme?

If I don’t blog again before Thursday, I hope you have a very happy and safe Thanksgiving.

Confessions

Posted on 6:45 PM by Unknown
Before I get started I need to say this I do not want another baby right now.

Here lately, and I am going to go ahead and blame it on every prego and tiny baby I’ve seen, I have been missing it. I’ve been missing my pregnant belly, missing the feeling of my little tiny babe kicking inside of me. I miss feeling him roll and flip, I miss hearing his heart beat on that little box and seeing his tiny little profile on that little screen.

I miss the new baby smell, the grunts and coos, the way he would snuggle up to me and fall asleep as he nursed. I miss how I could cradle him in my arms and hold him close.

My little man is growing up so quickly, I feel like the last 14 months have flown by. Where did the time go? I am working on a project that may or may not become grandparent Christmas gifts, I haven’t decided if we can afford it or not but I’d like to do a photo book for each set of grand and great grandparents. It would have pictures of Parker from his first moments on earth to the most recent pictures I have. Hopefully I can get them all together and have them made.

Anyway I am no longer the momma of a little baby; I’m the momma of a toddler. A toddler who climbs out of bed! Not his crib but mine and Michael’s bed…he just rolls onto his tummy and scoots down like he’s done it forever. He is a toddler who walks, talks, has a definite personality and knows what he likes and doesn’t like.

Yesterday afternoon I just about died from the cuteness overload. I left work early because I felt sick; I got home, got in bed and was watching Dr. Phil and Oprah when I heard the door open. I laid there waiting for Michael to come in and say hi when I heard a –clump clump clump clump- of little footsteps across the wood floor and then the muffled sound from the carpet. Not long after they stopped and the most adorable boy I’ve ever seen poked his head in the doorway and smiled at me. He had a look of such joy, like he had been looking forward to seeing me all day long. I melted right there. After smiling he tried his darndest to run into the room but stumbled, when he got up and came to the edge of the bed he held his arms up for me to pick him up and put him on the bed with me. I gave him a big hug and he gave me a little kiss, it was so sweet. Then he proceeded to roll all over the bed or stand up and then fall back onto his hiney and say “Boom” until I decided we should probably go see what Daddy was doing.

I guess now that Parker is getting older and more independent from me, I am beginning to miss my little baby. I’m sure it’s only natural for moms to miss it. I know Parker still needs me in many ways but he isn’t content just sitting in my lap anymore, he must be doing something every minute. He is so curious and is learning so much right now, it’s amazing watching him grow…

I remember telling Michael that I wanted to try to have another baby when Parker was 18 months old, that way when baby number 2 was born Parker would be just over 2 years old. At the time, I thought that would be perfect! Now…I’m thinking we’ll be waiting until Parker is 3. If the next 2 years go by as quickly as this one has then it won’t be long, but I’m just trying to enjoy every moment with my little boy.

MIA

Posted on 6:05 PM by Unknown
Wow, I feel like it has been forever since I posted! I have been pretty busy with visiting family, decorating and shopping for Christmas, and our newest development...a boil on the inside of Parker's right leg.

Last weekend was pretty fun, Parker and I went to Houston for a visit. We did the usual, we visited with everyone and went shopping! I love going down there, I miss my family alot lately so its nice to visit more than once a month.

This weekend, starting on Thursday because I was off for Veterans Day, Parker and I went to my momma in law's house (GiGi) to get some of her year round items wrapped in bubble wrap to be put away for Christmas stuff. We ended up shopping most of the day as usual but got that out of the way for today! We got a lot done today in between a doctor visit and a fabulous lunch.

On Tuesday I noticed a bump on the inside of Parker's right leg, it looked like an ant bite and because I am one of those people who needs to pop things...I tried to pop it. Parker wouldn't let me do to much but on Wednesday morning it was the size of a quarter, red and puffy and then that afternoon he was running fever. He has run fever since then averaging around 101/102. I took him to the doctor today and we found out it was staph. I feel so bad for my little man! He is on antibiotics and we have to put heat on it to try to get it to come to a head and drain...gross huh.

So that's been my week! It hasn't been all terrible though because as you know, Parker tries to have a good time even when he's sick. We shopped yesterday and went to lunch and Parker was a happy camper most of the day. Same with today, he was a little fussy but that's understandable.

If you ever come to Lufkin, you need to go to Mar Terese, it is a little green house that was converted into a tea house. They have some delicious food and desserts to die for.

Ok it's time to heat the bump...I will try to post again soon! I have a guest post that I am excited to share so keep an eye out for that!

Halloween 2010

Posted on 6:50 PM by Unknown
Tonight is Halloween! We spent our evening at church for Trunk or Treat. It was so much fun and there were so many cute trunks and costumes. Parker didn't know what to think about some of the costumes and was afraid of a couple. It was fun to watch him take it all in.
I didn't get many pictures but I got a few. I hope everyone had a great weekend!

Happy Halloween!

Long Day

Posted on 9:49 PM by Unknown
It's Thursday night, 11:31 PM to be exact, and I am still up. I'm so tired I could fall asleep any minute but I'm trying to wait for Michael. I don't think I'm going to make it.

Tonight Michael's softball team is playing in the tournament, they were undefeated until their second game of the night BY ONE RUN! I mean really guys? One run? Ok enough of that talk, so because they lost the second game they had to play a third, this game would determine 1st and 2nd place. I haven't heard anything yet.

Parker and I went to the first game at 7 but we came home after that because little man was cranky and this momma had to cook! We got home, Parker got his bath and I sat down to rock him while he had his bottle. I took the opportunity to also watch Grey's.

After Grey's I got Parker down and started cooking. Work is having a Halloween Brunch and I was asked to make breakfast casserole. I think it's like crack or something, I have to make it every time we have a function.

Anyway I'm done cooking and as soon as I sat down I felt the tiredness. Michael just walked in the door and guess what!

They WON! I am so proud ::cheesy grin:: Michael looks so tired ha-ha but he is really happy.

Also before I go I want to say congratulations to our friends Scott and Meagan Moore, they just welcomed baby girl Carsyn into the world. She was born at 6:13 and weighed 7.6 lbs 19 inches long.

Well good night everyone, have a happy and safe weekend!

Uncle Awesome and a Stroll

Posted on 8:24 PM by Unknown
I love my brother, we don't get to see him often but whenever we do it is always a lot of fun. Parker loves his Uncle Awesome and Robert, if you're reading this, Parker smiled and touched the picture when he saw you.

It is so strange, Parker has certain looks and expressions that Robert had as a baby.

So now that I've gotten all mushy about my brother, I thought I'd close the weekend by saying and showing you that MY KID IS WALKING! Not continuously but he is getting there, we're both excited and worried...time to hang everything from the ceiling.

Oh and sorry for the crappiness that is my cell phone's video quality. I promise to get a video with the camera soon.

Have a great week y'all!

One of Those Moms

Posted on 1:33 PM by Unknown
Today I woke up to my kiddo coughing. He had been coughing throughout the night and it was only getting worse. I got up, showered and got dressed before going in to turn on his light and when I did I saw he was wide awake. This would be no big thing except it was an hour earlier than his usual wake up time, I blame the coughing.

I decided to go ahead and get him up and changed and while I was doing that I wanted to take his temperature. He had a low grade fever, nothing terrible and he was acting fine so I just gave him some Motrin and we headed out.

At daycare I let them know he was coughing and snotty and also to keep an eye on his temperature in case it got any higher. They said alright and as I turned to leave I noticed Parker happily playing with his friends. The kid never acts sick, he did fall asleep while eating lunch though.

By 10:00 I was a mess...I couldn't help but worry that his ear was infected again and that he was going to have to be put on another antibiotic for another 2 weeks. I called the nurse and left a message asking if I needed to come in even though his fever was a low one...Of course they said yes, I think they only see dollar signs. So I made Parker an afternoon appointment and that was that!

Now I know you're wondering "Whats wrong with that Krista?" and I'll tell you what was wrong...nothing. There was nothing wrong with Parker, his ear was fine and everything else looked good too. He is on Benadryl at night and either Claritan or Zyrtec during the day.

I didn't want to be one of those moms who worries all of the time and makes things worse than they are but I can't help it! With all of the times Parker has been to the doctors office in the last 13 months I bet I can count on 1 hand how many times I took him "Just to make sure" and there was nothing wrong.

I guess next time I just need to do Benadryl and Zyrtec first and then if that doesn't work I'll take him in.

So yes, my name is Krista and I am one of THOSE moms. The kind that calls her Mom/Granny/Aunt/MIL and lastly the clinic nurse at the first sign of green snot and a cough.

I know I spend $25 every time I go in and nothing is wrong but I get to go home with the peace of mind knowing that Parker's ear was just fine.

Weekend Wrap Up

Posted on 7:54 PM by Unknown
Our weekend was full and fun! We left Friday and went down to the deer lease, I made chicken tenders, mashed potatos and corn for supper and after eating, and cleaning up we drove around. Michael wanted to check his game camera to see if any deer were around his feeder but all there were, were racoons

Look at them! There are a ton of pictures like this one.
Saturday I made breakfast while Michael was hunting. I made eggs, sausage and biscuits, it was so good. Michael went out to put a guard on his feeder to keep the racoons out of his corn and then came back to get me and Parker. We drove around the lease and saw the old house where Michael's granddad was born, and some old barns. I don't have pictures of the house but I will be sure to get some next time, it is so pretty.
Saturday night Michael's Uncle, Aunt and a couple of cousins came out and we sat around talking and spending time. Sunday we drove around some more and then left around lunch time. It was a lot of fun.
Here are some pictures of the weekend!

This past Thursday we met Callie out at a school that had some pumpkins and hay bales to get some fall pictures of Parker. They turned out awesome, I love them!

My Son, The Artist

Posted on 8:05 AM by Unknown
So I am pretty proud of my baby and his beautiful art skills and just like any mother, I proudly display his creations on the fridge, eventually in frames in my dining room and at work!

Yesterday evening was open house at Parker's daycare so when I went to pick him up there were all sorts of things for me to see! They had collages of all of the kids in the class doing different activities. There was one for snack time showing them all sitting at the table like grown ups eating cookies or crackers or something. There was one of nap time and I saw my little baby sleeping on a cot like a big boy. There were 2 or 3 of them doing different art projects and story time and then one of them playing outside.

It was so sweet seeing the things my little guy does all day and it while it made me sad that I am missing those things while at work, I was happy that he is learning to do so many things.

After I talked to his teachers about the pictures, they told me that Parker is really the only kiddo in the class who can point to his facial features and say some of them. Me or Teacher "Parker where is your nose?" Parker *Points to nose* "Noooo" he points to his eyes, nose and mouth. He can also show you his tongue when you ask him where it is.

Other than learning his facial features and some words he has also been taking one or 2 steps everyday and we think he is getting really close to taking off!

When it was time to go, I was given a folder that they made from construction paper that Parker decorated with colors, stickers and his hand print. Inside were some pictures he colored, chalked and painted. Here are those projects along with my wall of art at work :)

Have a wonderful Wednesday!
